Good advice! I would add, if the ill person is in a relationship, talk to their husband, wife or partner. That person, the spousal caregiver is usually the chief support and cheerleader for their ill partner. And the spousal caregivers have needs, too -- to be recognized, to be listened to. Sometimes, "How can I help" can be turned into a listening session, that will naturally bring out how you can help.
