For 3 years my father cared for my mother as she suffered from cancer and was on dialysis. My father had heart problems and macular degeneration, but still managed to shop, cook, do laundry and take care of mom. He kept himself healthy because he knew how important that was to enable him to do what he had to do. I don't think he fully realized how stressful it was caring for her. The night she died, he said he felt like a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders,and he was glad she would now be at peace. I hope other caregivers reading about David will realize how important it is to take of yourself so that you can take care of your loved one.

Thank you for publishing this article. I am David's sister. He was my best friend, and really my hero. ALL care givers are heroes! You practice heroic virtue everyday! You are awesome and need to be praised!
Please heed the message of this article, and take care of yourself! Ask for help, and allow others to care for you!

This poignant article points out how deceiving appearances can be for spousal caregivers. A person who is to all appearances a "model" spousal caregiver can actually be literally working him/herself into the grave.
