Dear FiftyAndFurthermores,

We still have five weeks left of summer, despite the arrival of dark toned sweaters in the mall, and the Halloween candy in the grocery store. August is in full swing with sweltering sunny days and hot steamy nights. Summer goes by so fast, make the most of this carefree time. If you haven’t had a chance to truly celebrate the season yet, it’s not too late to recapture your summer. Summer reminds us of simpler days, cold lemonade on the porch, tire swings, baseball and crickets. It’s a nostalgic and carefree time. Our brains get deliciously fuzzy and relaxed, even if our pace is hectic. Kick off your shoes and enjoy the feeling of cool grass on your bare feet.

Many of us FiftyAndFurthermores who are grandparents get to enjoy the break from school to spend more time with the younger generation. When we steal some time with our own grandkids, and give their parents a much deserved break, we love to spoil them. We let them do the somewhat naughty and forbidden things that their parents would never let them do! My husband Isaac loves to keep his grandkids up late at night playing poker and eating junk food. I bet that the first time that our grandson ever tastes beer, it won’t be sneaking it with his peers. It will be with his beloved grandpa!

August is also a great time for travel, even in this worrisome economy when gas is over $4.00 a gallon. Many of us with the travel bug still enjoy visiting exotic locations, but there are new ways of traveling that are creative, cost effective, and fun. Group travel, elder hostels, and multi-family beach homes – yes, even for us over 50! Hotels are now offering great deals due to this slow travel time, they often cut rates mid-week. And we all know that nothing beats hotel sex!

There are many free events like music concerts in the parks that we can all enjoy and savor in the summer. Find these quintessential summer events in your neck of the woods and embark on a “staycation” right in your own hometown. Visit your local air-conditioned museums and art galleries, or your local university for new plays and speakers. Set up a blanket in the backyard with a picnic candlelight dinner under the stars. Catch up on a good book in a hammock, and rent classic old summer movies like “Field of Dreams.”

It’s time to gather your fruits before the cool winds come.

Happy Summer Reading,

Dr. Dorree Lynn
